Blog #3: My Role: Tuesday Oct 25th
My main responsibility at Bret Harte middle school is tutoring students and helping Ms. Dirlam with anything she needs. Every week I start off by seeing one student at the school library and running through reading exercises then proceed with another student. My title is tutor and teacher assistant. Other tasks that I complete each week consists of grading papers, entering into grade book, and tutoring during AVID. A regular day looks like this: I arrive at Bret Harte at 8:15 and sign in at the office. I then go to room 9 and get a student to come with me to the library. I ask them to complete either flash card practice or do multiplication. After one person is done, which takes around 5-10 minutes, I tell them to call another student to come to me. I do this until the it's lunch time. After lunch, I become one of the tutorial teachers in AVID and just observe and and ask questions to get the students to solve a problem they were stuck on from either notes or homework.
Blog #4: Project Brainstorm: Tuesday Nov 1st
For my WLE project, I am thinking about using my tutoring as a project. I will collect data and help the students to advance in their academics. I came up with this idea with my mentor. She needed me to help the students become better readers. I am excited to do this project because I will be working with two classes consisting of 7th and 8th graders who are not reading at their level, but below. Some are trouble makers which would make it interesting to work with and others who are quiet. In order to finish my project, I will need to have data before the project and then after to able to evaluate the students and determine their outcome.
Blog #5: Progress on my WLE Project: Tuesday Nov 8th
Today at my WLE I did the same except I started with math as the flash cards become too easy. Math was incorporated because the math teacher asked my mentor to help the kids with math somehow since they are not doing that well in math to. I did a pre-assessment to see how good the students were with their multiplication from 0-12. My mentor and me talked about how we could collaborate on the project and what I needed to be successful. She suggested using their grades from before I helped and then after I helped. So far, I have seen how well the students can do their multiplication so I will be helping them soon.
_Blog #6: Leadership Skills: Tuesday Nov 15th
I am using Thinking Critically the most because I have to evaluate students' performance weekly and think of ways on how to assist them.I am using it very well and do not to improve much. This leadership skill is helping me do my work because it is needed to help the children. My mentor uses commucating powerfully and completing projects effectively because we collaborated on the project and communicated a lot.
_Blog #7: What I learned, Reflection: Tuesday Nov 22nd
Challenges that I had faced at my WLE were children that did not cooperate. I had overcome it by talking with them and seeing why they will not do what I had asked. I talked to their sort of like mini-counseling and try and help them. The importance of my project was being to help students learn material they should have already learned, such as multiplication and vocabulary below their reading level.
_Blog #8: Professionalism: Tuesday Nov 29th
When I was looking for an internship, I first tried to work at a computer place but there were too many requirements. I then called Mrs. Dirlam and asked if hse needed an intern, and she gladly accepted. I wasn't her intern until the principal approved of my plan, which was to help Mrs. Dirlam's students with their academics. The most effective way of looking for a job is to seek for what you are most interested in. The most effective way to get hired is to have qualities fit for the job such as experience. I think being a professional in the work world means to be responsible, mature, and a hard worker.
_Blog #9: Life at my WLE: Tuesday Dec 6th
Today I gave the students a test to see how much they have learned over the duration of the project. I then finished my keynote and added the data collected. As an intern, I improved my communication skills and collaboration skills. My workplace is a great place to work because everyone is nice and the students need a lot of assistance.
_Blog #10: The End: Tuesday Dec 13th
My WLE was a great experience overall. Next year I will be prepared for any internship by getting experience firsthand. Also I might intern at the same workplace because I enjoyed helping the students. Helping them made me feel like a better person and I will like to continue to get them to learn what is needed.
